Heather Caton, President of World Genesis Foundation, had the opportunity to attend the Distinguished Speaker Series, hosted by the UNESCO Center for Peace and Hood College. After meeting Mr. Oleg Kravchenko: Charge d’Affaires of the Republic of Belarus, with Lola Bokini and Nathaniel Erb, of UNESCO Center for Peace, we visited several places in Fredrick Maryland and learned about the rich history that surrounds the city.

At the event, the President of Hood College spoke followed by Lola Bokini, coordinator of the program. Mr. Oleg Kravchenko: Charge d’Affaires of the Republic of Belarus spoke to a room full of students and educators. He spoke about the country of Belarus, its history, economy and business, politics, culture and tourism. He shared about how got started in his work and some of his experiences. Mr. Oleg Kravchenko was the deputy head of mission at the Belarusian Embassy in Sweden from 1999 to 2003. He was appointed to Washington in 2007 and became charge d’affaires of Belarus in the U.S. the following year. Heather said, “It was a great cultural experience to listen to all Mr. Oleg Kravchenko had to share. There were many young people at the event who were very interested to learn more about Belarus.”

The Distinguished Speaker Series lectures is a monthly program designed to expose local students (high school and college level) and civil society members to the views of our speakers on a wide variety of topics involving peace, world affairs, politics, business and economics, science and environment, history, arts and entertainment. Distinguished speakers enlighten their audience to the unique perspective of other societies, their accomplishments and challenges in the 21st century, thus serving as the medium between two communities through which conversations may begin. The Speaker Series events include panel discussions on social issues, world events, as distinguished Speakers get the opportunity to educate students on their home country’s views and challenges in the modern world.
