The World Genesis Foundation brought new cultural awareness program to Atlantykron Summer Academy for the 26th edition. The Cultural Awareness Class was a series of 6 presentations. The goals of the course was to inform, expand the participants perception of culture and inspire the group to explore for information with a better understanding of their own culture as well as others, either through their own studies, research or experience.

The classes had approximately 20-30 participants. The first class involved an in depth presentation that covered the topics. What is Culture? How it is developed? We explored some Cultural Awareness Hotspots, such as gestures, body language, behavior structures and daily interactions.

The workshop continued with Cultural Awareness Training, students had to design and engineer a structure that would not break an egg dropped from a particular height. Each team had a challenge for example some people in their team did not speak their language, how did they meet this challenge, adapt and come up with a solution? It was followed by a competition with the teams to see whose egg did not break. The second training was a game with where each student was giving an envelope containing pieces of playing cards. The challenge was that different people were assigned a culture, some did not speak the language and some had a particular belief system. Some people had different values. Students had to work to decide how to get the card pieces they needed to complete a playing card. Whoever had the most complete cards at the end of the game was the winner. Participants could work as an individual or create partnerships. What was interesting is how the students decided to overcome not understanding each other in language, gestures or what they valued. Both exercises were followed by discussions on their experience and questions along with their ideas.

In the four classes that followed we had special guest speakers form different countries to speak about their own culture, to talk about their experiences with other cultures, their stories and what they learned. With Roberti Quaglia, who spoke about Italy, Olga Dmitrienko spoke about Russia and Elianna de Zwarte, who spoke about the Netherlands and Heather Caton speaking about the U.S.A. and students who spoke about Romanian culture. Each discussion started with somethings in particular to each country and their culture, food, home life, gestures, holidays, values, how we see other cultures, our prejudices, stereotypes and even business. The discussions took life with stories, experiences, comparisons of similarities and differences and advice.

Keeping in line with the ideals of UNESCO, Atlantykron Summer Academy greatly promotes UNESCO core goals to contribute to the creation of sustainable development and intercultural dialogue by promoting collaboration among nations through education, science, culture and communication.
